Junior welterweight champion of the world Danny “Swift” Garcia dominated and ultimately stopped Brooklyn’s Paulie Malignaggi in Round 9, Saturday night at the Barclay Center in New York on PBC on ESPN.
Garcia (31-0, 18 KOs) who move up to the welterweight division, was cracking Malignaggi with left hooks and hard rights all night long.
The light-fisted Malignaggi (33-7, 7 KOs) had no answer for Garcia’s power shots. He started the fight moving well around the ring — hoping to drag the fight to the finish line — using his jab.
However Garcia was able land power punches that wobbled Malignaggi several times, and in Round 9 referee Arthur Mercante Jr. had seen enough and embraced Malignaggi to spare him from further beating.
The official time of the stoppage 2:22 in Round 9.
