Abner Mares (28-1-1, 15 KO's) is back with impressive win tonight against Jose Ramirez (24-4-2, 15 KO's) in the second televised fight of the night at the MGM Grand Garden on Showtime
Mares scored a total of three knock downs. The first knockdown came at about 2:06 in the very first round. Mares sent down Ramirez with a series of body shots. It looked like out of balance on Ramirez part, and he got immediately obviously unhurt. The second knockdown took place in Round 3, as Mares unleashed flurries to the head and body while Ramirez was on the ropes. Although Ramirez not touching the canvas, the referee ruled a knockdown, 27 seconds remaining in round 3. It's just the ropes that keep Ramirez standing. The third knockdown came in the fifth round. Mares landed three-punch combo that sent Ramirez down hard. This time he's obviously hurt.
To Ramirez credit, although he suffered three knockdown total (actually it should be four as he took a knee after a right hook from Mares landed on his body in Round 4) but he's dangerous the entire night against Mares. He always came back strong every time he ate big left and right hooks upstairs and downstairs from Mares. He's bringing the fight to Mares and always pressing forward to the entire course of the fight.
But in Round 5, the big shots from Mares has taken its toll on Ramirez. After the knockdown in the fifth frame, it looked like the corner of Ramirez had seen enough. With the advice of Ramirez corner, the referee stopped the bout giving Mares the victory.
Mares' asking for a rematch with his former sparring partner Jhonny Gonzalez who knock him out in the very first round during their 2013 featherweight world title fight. With the win, big things coming up for Mares next year!
