Mosley knockouts Mayorga in Round 6

Shane-Mosley-Ricardo-Mayorga
Shane Mosley did exactly what he did to Ricardo Mayorga in 2008. This time, he did it in the first half of the scheduled 12 rounds of their "grudge match" at the Forum, Inglewood, California live via PPV Saturday night.

Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KO) dropped Mayorga with a body shot in the dying seconds of Round 6. Mayorga (31-9-1, 25 KO) complained for a low blow, but replay showed it was a legit body punch.

The official time of the stoppage 2:59 mark in Round 6.

Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares preview

Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares preview

Not so long ago Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares fight could have been bigger. But in that particular time, two years ago, they refused to fight each other.

Mares (29-1-1, 15 KOs) insisted that Santa Cruz at time is not a step up fight, and he wanted only to fight the best. And one of the best at that time is Nonito Donaire, but because of boxing's cold war the Donaire fight is frozen several negative degrees south of the thermometer and it stayed like that.

Instead of Santa Cruz and Mares facing each other, they found separate ways.

Both men fought different opponents and had unfavorable outcome. Mares was frozen by Jhonny Gonzalez in the very first round in a fight he's expected to dominate being on his peak, while the older Gonzalez was somewhat on the decline at that time.

On the other hand, Santa Cruz (30-0-1, 17 KO's) although remained undefeated, has shown some weaknesses to lower caliber opponent. He showed a lot of flaws against lesser opposition that he should had easily defeated. He stepped down to his opponent's level. Maybe he became complacent in training?

Now, even if they found different ways at the time they should have fought, still the road leads to one another. They will finally meet at the Staples Center to headline PBC on ESPN. But is it the perfect timing?

When Pacquiao was iced by Juanma in 2012, Pacquiao cameback strong and won convincingly against Rios, Bradley and Algieri. Until the fans interest for a Mayweather fight came back. We had the richest fight in May, although outcome is action poor.

But for Uncle Al Haymon Santa Cruz vs. Mares stalling this fight longer doesn't make it even better. He can't wait no more. They should fight now or else they can't salvage any fan interest.

With that said, I think this is gonna be war! Both men needed to win this fight, otherwise the loser for sure will not be able to reach the peak of the mountain, but instead make at a short cut to the side and go downhill.

Santa Cruz 27 years old, and Mares 29 years old don’t want this to happen in their career at this point. This is a must-win fight for both of them. Many expected that this fight might lead to a trilogy. Some expected a Morales-Barrera like outcome or a Marquez-Vazquez. And I agree. This could be a classic all Mexican war. This is also a battle for who's the best featherweight fighter in California!

Don’t miss this fight live on ESPN/ESPN Deportes at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Boxing's Top 3 face-first knockout

Boxing's Top 3 face-first knockout
As a boxing fan, I love matches that ended with knockouts. Who don’t like it by the way?

But of course, I like also those tactical fights.

It will show exactly what the sweet science is all about. But in general, fan-friendly fights were those that ended in knockouts.

In this post, I ranked the most brutal one—the face-first planted knockouts. A fighter was out (no need for the 10 count) even before its face hit the floor. The fighter consciousness separated from his body, soon after the punch landed, making the hands incapable defending the fall---having its face-first hit the floor!

Here's my Boxing's Top 3 face-first knockout

Begin Slideshow!

3. Mairis Briedis KO 5 Manuel Charr

Even hardcore boxing fans don't know that this fight happened on Aug. 22. Not until the undefeated Mairis (17-0, 14 KOs) knockout Charr (28-4, 16 KOs) in a brutal face-first dive style. The video of the knockout makes rounds on the internet.

It is a potential KO of the year! This is what exactly a fighter should do if he wanted to get noticed. Let your hands do the talking. Briedis did it! He did it to the tune of right uppercut, left hook combination. Watch it!

2. Sergio Martinez KO2 Paul Williams rematch

In the first bout, former lineal middleweight champion Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KOs) lost to a majority decision, but they exchanged knockdown in the first round. It only showed that both men has the power to knocked its other.

In the rematch, as early as the second round, Martinez landed a left hook that shocked Williams' (41-2, 27 KOs) world! What made it look so gross to see -- apart from Williams face-first flight to the floor -- is that he was lying with eyes wide open for few seconds.

It looked like a crime scene, but it stayed like that for few seconds though. In God's grace Williams recovered quickly and fought two more fights (winning all those) before a shocking accident brought him out of the ring for good. But the fight is not over for the great champion. Keep punching Champ!

1. Juan Manuel Marquez KO6 Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez fought a total of 40 rounds in a four-fight series.

Pacquiao (57-6-2, 38 KOs) scored a total of five knockdowns; won 2 fights; one draw, before the stunning face-first knockout defeat happened---one second remaining in the sixth round of fight number 4.

On the other hand, Marquez (56-7-1, 40 KOs) scored a total of two knockdowns---all were scored in fourth fight; lost twice; one draw, before he got the biggest win of his boxing career. Marquez landed a counter right hand that sent Pacquiao crashing face-first planted on the floor. The most devastating one-punch knockout making Pacquiao unconscious for few seconds leaving Pacquiao's country in total disbelief. Watch it!

Golovkin vs Lemieux: A Tactical Slugfest

[caption id="attachment_6015" align="aligncenter" width="800"]Golovkin vs Lemieux: A Tactical Slugfest Golovkin-Lemieux face-off during the Los Angeles Press Conference. Credit: Hogan Photos[/caption]

If you do not know who the reigning IBO/WBA middleweight titlist Gennady "GGG" Golovkin is, then you will get to know him very well after you watch him take on IBF middleweight titlist David Lemieux in Madison Square Garden on October 17th. According to Andre Ward's trainer Virgil Hunter, when Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao are long gone from the sport, GGG will be one of the fighters to carry the torch in keeping boxing in the forefront. I tend to agree with Hunter, but only for a short time frame, since Golovkin is 33 years of age.

Golovkin is 33-0 with 30 knockouts. The man has a 91% percent knockout ratio, the highest in boxing today. He was a silver medalist in the 2004 Olympic games and has never been dropped or knocked out in over 375 fights in the amateurs or the pros. GGG has an educated "Mexican style" where he pressures his opponents with subtle head movement, a stiff jab, and a left hook to the body that will fold anyone who dare expose a rib cage. GGG does not just stand in front of his opponents and throw careless punches. He has excellent positioning, footwork, and most of all power. But some say he has been carefully brought up in the professional ranks and has not fought any quality opponents in their prime. That changes against Lemieux.

Lemieux is the pride of Montreal, Quebec, Canada who holds a record of 34-2 with 31 knockouts. Lemieux also puts pressure on his opponents, ripping left and right hooks to the head and body, with the capability of knocking anyone out with either hand. Lemieux has won the Canadian Amateur Championships three times but was never interested in qualifying for the Olympics. Although during Lemieux's professional career, he has stepped up against quality opponents. Two of which were in his losses against Rubio and Alcine.

Like many power punchers, Lemieux has relied on his power to end fights quickly. With power comes exhaustion. With exhaustion comes vulnerability. With vulnerability comes getting hit. And that's exactly what happened to Lemieux in those losses. He loaded up his deadly hooks, got tired, and got stopped by Rubio and was defeated in a majority decision by Alcine.

In Lemieux's most recent fights, he has gotten better utilizing the jab, moving his head, and keeping his defense tight. Tactics that he had better use against Golovkin. In GGG's most recent fights, he has appeared vulnerable, getting tagged as he is standing and banging. Golovkin attributes that to the fans getting their money's worth. I really doubt he wanted to expose himself with the risk of getting knocked out.

In his latest interview, Golovkin, with his million dollar smile and jovial personality, expressed he is "scared" of his next opponent. Do I believe him? No, I don't. Lemieux better choose his punches wisely against the seasoned tactician and GGG better not open himself up to this young deadly puncher. Lemieux said he is going to shock the world come October 17th when he defeats Golovkin, becoming a multi titlist middleweight of the world. I believe the young lion will be stopped in 8 in this potential fight of the year candidate.

Watch: Mairis Briedis brutal KO on Manuel Charr

https://youtu.be/wwx51o99MQg

"The bigger they come the harder they fall".

Manuel Charr was really coming big towards Mairis Briedis to the corner of the ring, but a perfect right uppercut, left hook combination from Briedes knocked the conciousness out on Charr even before his face hit the canvass.

A sure knockout of the year candidate!

I promise you, there will be blood - David Lemieux

[caption id="attachment_5996" align="alignnone" width="800"]I promise you, there will be blood - David Lemieux David Lemieux talks about his upcoming fight with GGG during the press conference in New York. Photo: Rich Kane[/caption]

Canadian boxer David Lemieux promised that there will be blood on October 17 when he faces the Gennady Golovkin in the the ring at the Madison Square Garden.
"I respect Golovkin I think he is great fighter, but I'm not here to be his friend I am here to be is opponent. I promise you, there will be blood" says Lemieux.

Lemieux (34-2, 31 KOs) is a tremendous knockout artist who sport 31 wins by way of stoppage out of 34 victories in his ledger. He will be facing yet another knockout artist in Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) who is undefeated in 33 fights and had 30 wins inside the distance.

That being said, this is gonna be a must-see middleweight contest, wherein Lemieux already promised that there will blood. Who draws more blood still remains to be seen as both fighters have the power to knockout each other. This is gonna be painful for both fighter.

And yeah! This fight gets even more intriguing as it is being reported that the winner of this fight will face also the winner of Cotto-Canelo fight, which is another massive fight coming up.

Watch: Krzysztof Glowacki upsets Marco Huck [Full fight video]

Poland's Krzysztof Glowacki, 29, scores a stunning upset versus Marco Huck of their cruiserweight title match on Saturday at the Prudential Center, New Jersey.

Glowacki (25-0, 16 KOs) retains his undefeated record and took Huck's title home via knockout in Round 11. He was struggling early in the fight as the champion was landing hard shots from outside before stepping back and doubling up with defense.

In the 6th round, Huck (38-3-1, 26 KOs) dropped Glowacki with a thunderous left hook around 2:19 minute mark of the round.

Flat on his back, Glowacki pick himself up and although obviously hurt from the knockdown, instead of holding, he fought back with all his might. He landed some but of course taking a lot also from the charging defending champion who wanted to keep his title intact, but Glowacki was able to survive the round even landed shots that Huck surely felt.

The end of Huck's title reign came in the 11th round when Glowacki landed a left cross and a straight left that put down Huck 47 seconds remaining in the round. The crowd went wild! Huck beat the count but with unsteady legs. The hungry undefeated challenger unleashed undefended flurries that sent Huck down for good. Glowacki looked like my mother hanging laundry up on the ropes. Huck's back were on the ropes that prevented him from going out.

See for yourself on the below Huck-Glowacki full fight video.

After a rocky negotiation, Cotto-Canelo officially set on Nov 21

CMTZIF8WoAAHyUI

Fight is sealed and set!

Cotto-Canelo has been the much talked about fight for a while. Although negotiations fell apart earlier this year, but for now Cotto-Canelo is officially set!

The classic Puerto Rico vs. Mexico rivalry will take place on November 21. at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas live on HBO pay-per-view.

The Cotto-Canelo fight has been considered the alternative mega-fight during the pre-Mayweather-Pacquiao fight. This fight could have been the biggest fight this year if May-Pac didn’t happen.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (45-1-1, 42 KO’s) may seized the Cinco de Mayo date from Floyd by facing Cotto in May. And also if the Mayweather-Pacquiao did not materialize.

However, Mayweather-Pacquiao did happen and Cotto-Canelo negotiations also fell apart.

Cotto-Canelo negotiations started early this year. But Mexican superstar pulled out from the Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KO's) negotiation. He took James Kirkland in May instead.

Canelo didn’t get an answer from Cotto’s camp about the potential middleweight match-up. But Oscar Dela Hoya is optimistic that the two superstars will meet down the line.

Cotto-Canelo may not surpass the revenue Mayweather-Pacquaio generated. But action wise, I think, we have a potential fight of the year candidate. This fight could be much more entertaining than the dull fight of the century.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.: The media put all hype on Manny Pacquiao

[caption id="attachment_5979" align="alignnone" width="1800"]Floyd Mayweather Jr.: The media put all lie on Manny Pacquiao Floyd Mayweather Jr. poses with Andre Berto during their kick-off press conference Thursday. Photo: Showtine[/caption]

Floyd Mayweather Jr. had a hoarse voice coming in at the kick-off press conference. When it was his turn to speak at the podium to talk about his fight against Andre Berto on September -- his last fight according to him -- he was coughing. Maybe because of too much chanting "hard work" and "TBE" during his hard training, which seemed nobody care as I can only see those on his Shots account without seeing any reporting about how he's preparing the fight.

I mean it seems nobody really cares about the fight. Nobody really talk about the fight and if there were, they were lashing him for choosing Andre Berto (30-3, 23 KOs) in the first place and the fight is not on free TV as it was first rumored.

It could have been a nice move of the undefeated American if he put this fight on free TV because it looks like giving back to the fans for raking in between 120-200 million dollars in his lackluster fight that we've been waiting for half a decade to happen.

It could have this been situation: Floyd picked an easy fight, put it on free TV and not charging $74.95, boxing fans happy; he'll go out there and win and be 49-0 (tie with Rocky Marciano); get the sponsorship, advertisement money and retire.

However, this is not what is happening. Floyd Mayweather Jr. (48-0, 26 KOs) is all about money and I can't blame because the fight even if on free TV might not get good numbers of advertisers and sponsors because of taking on Andre Berto.

During the kick-off press conference, Floyd is ask about why Berto? Of course he's quick to defend about Berto, and even differentiates Manny Pacquiao and Berto. The difference is that "the media put all the hype on Manny Pacquiao says Floyd. The media "put all the hype on Manny Pacquaio".

I think it's not just hyping Many Pacquiao. I think the media is hyping the match-up itself because the fans wanted the fight in 2009. Floyd was the just the receiving end of criticism, because the popular opinion is -- he's the one ducking Pacquaio. But he should not blame the media. I think he should thank the media instead.

However, what I don’t like though is that how the media especially the media covering closely Pacquiao (that would be the Philippine media for sure) for not reporting what exactly happening in Pacquiao's camp. Yes I'm talking about that shoulder injury. Well, what the media will report if the injury did not really happen?

When Floyd was ask why he chose Berto instead of Amir Khan, Floyd is quick to deflect the question by saying Khan should get past Danny Garcia. Isn't it Berto should get past first Robert Guerrero?

Guerrero beat Berto, and Guerrero was taken to boxing school by no other than Floyd himself. Floyd is fighting the man who was beaten by the man he was beaten. Naaaa…! The school of thought is that it should be the other way around. Really, were moving backward.

When Floyd was ask about Keith Thurman, who has a title at the welterweight division, he again was quick to dismiss Thurman. "Nobody knows too much about him" says Floyd. So okay, let's deal with it. We have Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Andre Berto officially on September 13 live on Showtime PPV for $74.95 and I am not buying it, but I will watch it somewhere on the World Wide Web.

Pagara brothers aim to score spectacular knockout wins in Dubai

[caption id="attachment_5968" align="alignnone" width="720"]Pagara brothers aim to score spectacular knockout wins in Dubai Albert and Jason face-off against their respective Mexican opponent during Thursday's weigh-in at the Boracay club in Dubai.[/caption]

In their first fight overseas, brothers Albert and Jason Pagara will face separate Mexican foes on Pinoy Pride 32 dubbed "Duel in Dubai II" on Friday night at the Dubai world Trade Center.

The undefeated "Prince" Albert Pagara (23-0, 16 KOs) will face Jesus Rios of Mexico for the younger Pagara's super bantamweight title, while the older brother Jason, will square off Ramon Alcaraz for a 10-round non-title bout at the junior welterweight division.

Albert, who tipped the scales weighing 121.5 lbs. during Thursday's weigh-in, said that he might look for the knockout.

“Makuha ko sa timing, focus lang sa ibabaw ng ring, makukuha din ‘yan [Rios] ng knockout", says Albert Pagara during their visit at Tag 91.1, a popular radio station in Dubai, referring to his opponent Jesus Rios.

Jesus Rios (31-7) weighed over the division limit and registered on the scales at 125.8 during the weigh-in at the Boracay Club in Dubai. He was given two hours to remove that excess baggage or he will lose the opportunity for Pagara's title on the scales.

Jason Pagara (35-2, 22 KO's) who weighed a little over the junior welterweight limit at 142.4 lbs. was also confident of delivering a spectacular showing in front of OFWs in Dubai against Ramon Alcaraz (15-4) for a 10-round bout. Alcaraz also weighed over the limit at 142.6 but the fight is still a go as it is for a non-title fight.

An Opportunity Stateside

An impressive performance  from the Pagara brothers in front of OFW boxing fans could earn the opportunity to be  among those fighters that ALA promotions will showcase on their debut in the US this coming October.

Overwhelming ticket demand

Tony Aldequer of ALA promotions doubled the seating capacity of the venue for "Duel in Dubai II" as the previous card was sold out and there was no seat available for the media who wanted to cover the previous fight.

The previous fight loses sight in the local scene as the local media was not able to cover. Duel in Dubai first installment was held in a much smaller venue.

Expecting more boxing cards in Dubai

If Dubai World Trade Center, a much bigger venue will be jam-packed Friday night, I'm expecting bigger boxing cards pouring in the oil-rich Emirates state, which is also home of thousands of Filipino expatriates.

Let say Amir Khan-Pacquiao next year? Or Donaire-Quigg in November?

Ronda Rousey: The Iron Mike Tyson of Combat Sports

[caption id="attachment_5965" align="alignnone" width="1600"]Ronda Rousey: The Iron Mike Tyson of Combat Sports (Photo by Hans Gutknecht/Los Angeles Daily News)[/caption]

UFC Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey (12-0) defeated Bethe Correia (9-1) out of Rio De Janeiro in an exciting 34 second bout via first round knockout Saturday night. Rousey decided to go toe to toe with Correia. That was a dangerous task considering Rousey gained fifteen pounds for the fight in order to compete with the much bigger Correia. In the post fight interview, Rousey said, "Instead of forcing a clinch, I planned to overwhelm her striking first so she would want to clinch. And that's exactly what happened."

In Rousey's past four fights, she has knocked out three of her last four opponents. That is delving into new territory for Rousey, since she is widely known for her signature arm bar submission hold. That arm bar has prevented most of her opponents from going past the first round. Only one fighter came to mind after seeing Rousey quickly demolish the Brazilian -- that fighter is Iron Mike Tyson.

Love him or hate him, Mike Tyson (50-6, 23 KOs) was a dominating force back in the late '80s and '90s. Out of 56 fights, 23 of them did not go past the first round. That includes heavyweight championship fights against Bruce Seldon, Frank Bruno, Carl Williams, and Michael Spinks. Let's not forget the fight against Trevor Berbick where Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in boxing history at the age of 20. Tyson dispatched Berbick in two rounds.

Tyson sparked fear in his opponents prior to even stepping into the ring. Who could forget the look on Frank Bruno's face as he looked ill from worry prior to the opening bell. Or the fear overtaking Michael Spinks prior to getting knocked out with a body shot. These men were the best heavyweights in the world, and Tyson made them look amateur. It appeared no one was able to compete with Tyson. Just like it appears no one can compete with Rousey today.

Rousey showed a lot of tenacity and aggression coming out to the opening bell against Correia, just like Tyson did in his hey day. This woman came out swinging with rights, lefts, and knees, overwhelming her opponent. It is no longer armbars galore. Rousey has a lot more tools in her tool box nowadays. And that, ladies and gentleman, is AMAZING.

Rousey has the same exact fearlessness Iron Mike did. Rousey has the same exact look and focus as the former heavyweight champion of the world. Like ring side commentator Joe Rogan said, it truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we get to see such a dominating fighter like Rousey. I am ecstatic that I get to stick around and watch.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. the most undisciplined fighter in and out of the ring

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. the most undisciplined fighter in and out of the ring

As it has been already established, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., who is the son of a Mexican legend, has not had the best of luck in and out of the ring as of late. Back in 2012, Chavez Jr. was picked apart in eleven of twelve rounds against Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez in a showdown for the middleweight title of the world. But, in the twelfth round, Chavez Jr. came back with a valiant effort dropping the champion. That knock down caused a severe knee injury, pretty much ending the career of the great Maravilla.

After the Martinez fight, Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32 KOs) tested positive for having THC in his system during the training camp leading up to the biggest fight of his boxing career. Instead of seizing the opportunity to do mitt work with hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach, Chavez Jr. instead opted to do mitt work in the middle of his living room, when he wanted to, with one of his training camp hang-arounds. If Chavez Jr. would have won the fight, it would have made him the true middleweight champion of the world. But he lost and lost badly.

After that loss, Chavez Jr. decided to take on contender Bryan Vera (23-10, 14 KOs) at 168 pounds after initially making it a contract weight of 163. Well, that weight was not high enough for Chavez Jr. and he came in overweight. The fight went on, and Chavez Jr. won by a controversial decision. Actually, Bryan Vera won -- the judges just screwed it up. A rematch ensued and Chavez Jr. actually showed up in fighting shape. He ended up taking a decision win over Vera.

Then came the fight with Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs) a true Polish light heavyweight, who gave a superb effort against WBC light heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson. Now why in the world would Chavez Jr. want to fight a man as big as Fonfara, who gave a good effort against one of boxing's deadliest punchers? The man shoots that straight left down the pipe so accurately, it makes Manny Pacquiao want to quote Bruno Mars and say, "HOT DAM!" Well, Chavez Jr. chose to fight the much bigger Fonfara and got his granite chin tested. Chavez Jr. got dropped in the ninth round for the first time in his career. He later threw in the towel, giving the win to Fonfara.

After going through trainers Freddie Roach and Joe Goosen, Chavez Jr. is now settling on Robert Garcia. Chavez Jr. decided to cherry pick a fight against Marcos Reyes (33-3, 24 KOs), a blown up middleweight who has non-existent punching power, similar to Paulie Malignaggi. The contracted weight was 170 pounds. Chavez, once again comes in overweight at 170.8.

Not only has Chavez Jr. come in heavy in two out of his last four fights, his boxing looked terrible against Reyes. The man came in with his head down, shot his left hook and right hand the whole fight, obviously trying to knock out the physically smaller Reyes. The one or two rounds Chavez Jr. did use his jab, shockingly he won the round. But, Chavez Jr. reverted back to leading with his head and trying to knock out Reyes.

Chavez Jr. should have won the Reyes fight by knock out or a decision win by a
very wide margin. Yes, he claimed he hurt his hand in the third round. Although even before the third, he looked like he wanted a simple knock out, collect a paycheck, and go home. I am really not sure what Robert Garcia could do for Chavez Jr. If Chavez Jr. wants to be world champion again, something has got to change. Only Chavez Jr. knows what the answer is, to bring him back to being a solid contender.
